What a wonderful stay! The best place to stay if you’re hiking the Sandankyo Gorge. ||The idea of hiking the gorge as a day trip from Hiroshima is intense. Take the pressure off, catch a later bus to Sandankyo, stay in this beautiful home with Big Bear and wake in the mountains and start the walk in the morning. It will be one of the highlights of your time in Japan. Big Bear is great company, speaks perfect English, is a great cook. The room was great with down duvet, hot bath at night and a delicious dinner. We walked the gorge on a Friday and encountered about 6 other people. Perfect. Don’t miss taking the ferry to the restaurant, the menu is delicious and staff so friendly. It’s an idyllic spot to relax. We loved the gorge hike to the waterfalls. ||Thank you Big Bear for opening your home and heart. Your kindness and generosity are so very special.
A highlight of our time in Japan. We were welcomed so kindly and warmly into Big Bear’s home. What a wonderful experience. Thank you so much Big Bear for your kindness, generosity and beautiful home. It is such a special place, staying in the mountains in a wooden chalet. Waking up to mist in the valley and a full day hiking in the gorge was amazing.It’s insane to hike the gorge on a day trip from Hiroshima. Take the pressure off, catch a later bus and spend the night here first. The village is beautiful and we had an onsen and delicious dinner cooked by Big Bear. Great conversation with his impeccable English. Slept so well with down duvets. This place really is special.We hiked the gorge on a Friday and encountered 6 other people. The hike is beautiful. It’s such a peaceful break from Hiroshima. Don’t miss catching the ferry and eating at the small restaurant on the trail, the food is delicious and staff so friendly. If you’re looking for peace and a unique experience in the countryside, this is for you.
We had a wonderful stay at Alaskan Dream thanks to our host Okuma-San (better known as Big Bear). He is such a generous and kindhearted person with a great sense of humor. In fact if you arrive at Sandankyo bus station Big Bear will probably be there welcoming you as a volunteer, dispensing helpful information about this stunning area in his charming English.The guest house is most comfortable, better than most hotels I have to say. Everything was thoughtfully designed, the beds and towels luxurious. On our arrival after walking the Sandankyo gorge, our host thoughtfully readied a lovely onsen bath for us, it was bliss! During a shared dinner, we were blown away by Big Bear’s knowledge and philosophy on life, such a charming character. He loves nature, is well traveled and always ready to help with any information pertaining to his beloved homeland.The next day he took us to his favorite places in northern most Sandankyo and the surrounding area. This has turned out to be a most memorable and special trip. Thank you Okuma-San, we hope we’ll be lucky to visit again.I highly recommend you stay at Alaskan Dream guesthouse given the chance.
One of the most lovely homestay experiences I’ve ever had. Our host, “big bear” offered to pick us up from Tsutsuga Bus stop and drove us around for our whole three day stay. He was incredibly accomodating, kind and fun to talk to and thoughtful towards our needs - especially after our long day of hiking, he saw us walking back up the hill and ran a bath and made a coffee for us so it was ready for when we got back! He cooked for us and we had some wonderful communal meals. He’s running the place all by himself and was always willing to help and went above and beyond to really make us feel welcomed into his home - all this whilst recovering from his broken leg! Couldn’t recommend anymore! Thanks for a wonderful stay Big Bear!

I would rate 1 million stars if there was this option. The first time we met him was when we got off the bus from Hiroshima city, he was very passionate and friendly. He started giving us tips and guides of Sandankyo. In the beginning I was a bit scared as I didn't think people would be so friendly and nice to provide free guide in details. But after chatting with Mr. Big bear, I realized he is just very kind and genuine, his got a big heart and love helping people. Me and my husband didn't bring lunch as we thought we could buy some food there, unfortunately he told us there would be no shops that day. He offered us lunch at his guesthouse. They were very tasty 😋 After lunch he went with us for trekking. That day was actually close to the end of our honeymoon trip in Japan, we had really good chat and he told us his dream is not to make money but is to make great conversation and friends. His guesthouse just started 3 months ago, I wish we could stay there but we had to leave due to the travel plan. Hope one day we can see you again Mr. Big bear 🐻 Keep dreaming and I believe your guesthouse will be fully booked by summer 🌞 Thank you so much for being kind, it is hard to meet people like you nowadays. It's a wonderful memory during our honeymoon trip 💕 Take care of yourself and see you :)
Mr. Big Bear, the wonderful owner of the hostel, is incredibly kind. My friends and I forgot to eat lunch before our hike, so he invited us to his home and cooked us his Michelin 3 stars tomato soup. His place is so beautiful and cozy, and he even lent me his hiking hat. What a lovely experience! If I ever return to Sandokyo, I will definitely stay at his place and maybe go fishing with the owner 😂

山奥でまったりしたい時の宿泊施設にオススメです！周りは自然豊かな環境で、昼は自然探索、夜は山小屋っぽいこの施設でまったり！施設自体は新しく、家具にもこだわりが感じられます。山小屋ぐらしがしたい方にもオススメ！自然好きな外国人旅行者にもオススメです！

If you are looking for the perfect mountain getaway with a very knowledgeable guide, this is for you!This is an absolutely wonderful location, very close to Sandankyo Gorge. The guest house itself is an incredibly homey and peaceful cabin, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The real highlight though, is the host, Big Bear. Such genuine and generous hospitality is a very rare thing to find. And as two young female travelers, we also felt very safe around him.He picked us up from the bus stop on a rainy day, and told us it wasn't a good idea to hike that evening due to the weather, but that he had set up an onsen for us, and picked out some DVD recommendations for us to watch. It was a very relaxing evening. He even recommended places for us to eat, going so far as to reserve them for us and help us order. He also dropped us off and picked us up from the restaurants. He is very friendly, and we had a very good chat about Hiroshima okonomiyaki (he recommended us to get it with soba and oysters- we tried it after we left, amazing choice Big Bear!), fishing, travelling, and movies. Since we had some trouble with our bus on the way there, he went out of his way to ensure we had a plan to make it to our next location with no issues, driving us 30 mins to the best bus stop for the trip on the morning we left.Thank you for an amazing stay Big Bear! Hope to see you again someday!
