Best experience making Onigiri! Very kind and lovely hosts. Such a sweet informative and delicious experience. Definitely recommend as a lunch experience in Nara.
Whenever I felt hungry, I often bought onigiri from the convenience store. So learning how to make onigiri was always on my cooking bucket list. However, there are only a few onigiri workshops. This time, while visiting Nara, I found one and grabbed the opportunity.First, the history of onigiri was shown on a projector. Then, we were taught about the different types of onigiri, the fillings used inside, and how to make them. Finally, I made three different types of onigiri. I couldn’t shape the triangle properly at first, but sensei patiently taught me several times. What I loved most about this experience was the warm and healthy conversation with the hosts — it felt like a family gathering with brothers and sisters after a long time.By the way, it’s Muslim-friendly. Just make sure to inform them in advance about your dietary restrictions.
I cant recommend authentic local experience house enough! Such an amazing and authentic experience in Nara. I had the sake tasting experience, it took place in a beautiful 80-year-old traditional Japanese house that doubles as a place to stay, and it felt incredibly personal and welcoming. We learned about the history of sake, how it’s made, flavor profiles, and pairing, then enjoyed a fun, relaxed tasting and Japanese drinking party. Ending the experience by visiting a convenience store to buy snacks that paired with the sake was such a fun and uniquely Japanese touch. Highly recommend if you want a true local experience. I cant thank the host enough!
During my trip to Nara, I joined the onigiri workshop at the Authentic Local Experience House, and it became one of the best experiences of my trip in Japan. We learned the history and cultural meaning behind onigiri, and then prepared three different types ourselves. The hosts explained every step so clearly in English that even the tricky parts felt fun and manageable. After the workshop, we enjoyed a beautifully arranged Japanese-style lunch with homemade side dishes and our onigiris. I especially loved the chance to interact with the local hosts - they were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and easy to communicate with. Their hospitality made the entire experience even more special.Visiting Nara Park to see the deer is wonderful, but spending time with locals and learning something new offers a deeper connection to the city. If you are in Nara, I highly recommend booking this workshop. It’s a meaningful and delicious way to experience Japanese culture!😍🇯🇵
It was not just about making onigiri. I also got to learn the history of onigiri through fun quizzes. The host was very friendly, so I had a wonderful time with lots of smiles. It is perfect for children too, and families can enjoy it together. There are many filling options, from classic choices to unique ones like Japanese snacks, which made it even more fun.It is only a seven minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, so it is very easy to get to.The host also runs an Airbnb next door, so staying there together with the experience is a great idea.
Our onigiri-making session in Nara was fantastic! Our host was an excellent and welcoming teacher. The experience was perfectly balanced—highly informative and genuinely fun. We learned the secrets to making the perfect rice ball and loved every minute. Highly recommend this unique and delicious cultural experience!
A wonderfully fun and delicious rice ball-making experience!I always love to interact with local people during my travels and have participated in several experience programs, but my fondest memory here.We learned about the history of rice balls, made them ourselves, ate while chatting with mune san and had a delightful time. They taught us how to make them gently so it was challenging for me but I did manage it. We made 3 onigiri and after that, the hosts prepared beautiful washoku set for dinner. I liked Nara pickles and kinpira, too!Walking around to see deers in Nara Park is nice, but I highly recommend spending more time exploring Nara itself. This choice was an excellent one. I loved so much my own onigiri!
