My wife and I booked a 2-day curated hiking tour with Hokkaido Nature Tours. We specifically wanted something more active than the usual sightseeing itinerary, as we were preparing for a longer hiking adventure later in the year. The team understood exactly what we were looking for and put together two excellent days of hiking. We spent around 4–6 hours on the trails each day, enjoying a wonderful mix of scenery—cool mountain air, rugged terrain, lingering snow patches, sunshine, rain, and some truly spectacular views along the way.Our guide Ido was awesome! Knowledgeable, and great company throughout the trip. We learned a lot about the local area, nature, and Hokkaido's culture, but conversations also flowed naturally beyond the usual guide script, making the experience feel more like exploring with a local friend than being on a tour.To top it all off, the overnight stay at the onsen ryokan was exactly what we needed after a full day on the trails. Soaking in the hot spring while reflecting on the day's hike was incredibly relaxing.Everything was thoughtfully organized from the very beginning. We never had to worry about logistics, transportation, or planning. All we had to do was show up each morning and focus on our goal of getting several consecutive days of quality hiking under our belts.Enjoy hiking and wants to experience a more authentic and active side of Hokkaido? I would highly recommend Hokkaido Nature Tours.
My three friends and I spent a day out with the founder of HNT, Ido Gabay, hiking the Mount Tokachidake Summit in Hokkaido. From the first email I sent reaching out, to walking the summit the day of the hike, Ido was nothing but responsive, easy to work with, and very professional on the day of our trek. I would highly recommend reaching out to HNT to any other potential customers. You won't regret spending a day out with this team, and will definitely create lasting memories. Grateful for Ido's support in making our trip happen and willingness to work with us to create the right itinerary for our group.
We did our tour of Hokkaido with HNT. The experience was one of the best travel experiences we ever had. We had a professional guide, whose personable nature made it all the more pleasant.
We had such a wonderful time with our guide Yuichi Kudo! From start to finish, everything felt thoughtful, peaceful, and beautifully paced. Yuichi was very knowledgeable about Hokkaido without being overwhelming. We really felt connected to Hokkaido towards the end.And Hokkaido winter has so much to offer, the scenery alone was breathtaking. We were taken to spots we wouldn’t have found on our own and having the tour be private felt more intimate and unrushed with a friend! By the end, when it was time to leave, we were incredibly touched that we felt heartbroken to leave. If you want to experience Hokkaido and its hospitality, I highly recommend this tour.Of all the places we went to in Japan, this was our highlight and most memorable.Thank you so much :)
Another wonderful Hokkaido holiday with HNT. Friendly knowledgeable guide Vincent took us to the most amazing places from Lake Toya to Kushiro via beautiful views, fun activities and amazing wildlife. Highlights were snowshoeing in Shokyu canyon, Stellar’s Sea Eagles and the cranes. And not to forget a fabulous range of coffee shops. Great tour, great attention to detail. Our second visit with HNT and would highly recommend them.
Our group of 4 had a wonderful 8 day tour of Central and Eastern Hokkaido this past October that was arranged by Ido San of Hokkaido Nature Tours specifically tailored for our interests to see Hokkaido's wildlife in their natural setting, to enjoy scenic mountain vistas, and to experience traditional Japanese home cooking. We set off in a Toyota Vellfire 7-seater van from Sapporo with our guide Max San at the wheel. We went on nature hikes in Noboribetsu, Mt. Usu, Dasetsuzan National Park and Sounkyo Gorge with Max San guiding us to hidden waterfalls, deep caldera lakes, scenic mountain vistas, and steaming sulfur vents, mud pots, and geothermal pools heated by active volcanoes. The highlights were cooking a traditional lunch with Oba San and her granddaughter Miu San who were a great joy to meet! Also, preparing a soba lunch from buckwheat flour under the direction of Yonebayashi San and his wonderful wife at their soba farm in Shinshinotsu, Hokkaido.Max San was keen on spotting wildlife along the roads and trails, where we saw red foxes, white tail deer, egrets, red headed cranes, and the most amazing brown bear and her cub catching salmon in a river of the remote Shiretoko Peninsula.Overall, it was an awesome trip and I highly and enthusiastically recommend Hokkaido Nature Tours for your next visit to Hokkaido.
My group of 5 have been on two separate 6 day tours with Hokkaido Nature Tours, and it exceeded our expectations on both occasions! Our guide, Yuichi, went above and beyond to tailor the experience to our preferences, ensuring every moment was meaningful and enjoyable. His deep local knowledge, especially when it comes to hidden gems and the best spots for local cuisine, made our journey truly authentic. We were treated to breathtaking landscapes and a wide variety of immersive activities—canoeing on serene waters, a traditional tea ceremony, and even a home-cooking experience that gave us a real taste of local life. Each day was seamlessly planned, and the accommodations were very comfortable.Ido’s thoughtful planning and attention to detail made both trips unforgettable. We wholeheartedly recommend Hokkaido Nature Tours for anyone looking to experience the heart and soul of Hokkaido.

Hokkaido Nature Tours (HNT) is the first private tour we have taken for longer than a day, and boy was it worth every penny and second! We highly recommend HNT for travellers to Hokkaido for the following reasons:i) Pricing and valueHNT’s tour packages are customised to you. Their good value does not mean that HNT runs budget tours, but rather that you get a great experience for what you pay.ii) TransportationWe had a private vehicle and guide who doubled up as the driver. This was not a sedan car, but a Toyota Alphard MPV with cupholders, good air-conditioning and ample room for luggage and legs.iii) Professionalism and GuideFrom the start to end, HNT staff were professional and prompt in addressing our queries. This being our first multi-day private tour, we were concerned about whether our guide's personality would be a fit for us. We were guided by the capable and considerate Toshio-san and will request for him again if we return to HNT.iv) ItineraryThe itinerary was tailor-made to suit our preferences. As a guest, you can tell that HNT’s planning is deeply attuned to the seasons and rhythm of the beautiful land you will discover. One drawback is you spend as much time on the road as you do at each attraction, but that is to be expected given the vastness of Hokkaido.v) AccommodationThe tour we booked included accommodation, and the hotels did not disappoint. A generous amount of food options whether in the hotels or within walking distance with typical outstanding Japanese service. Both hotels we stayed at were traditional with onsens and public baths which you will enjoy after a day of sightseeing.
