Great place to finish up after visiting the nearby silver pavilion and philosophers path. As a fan of natural wines, I searched for places to visit during my stay in Kyoto and this was one of them. I got two wines, a red and an orange and they were both really good. The owner is a friendly guy and plays records on his decks whilst you are there, with some cool tunes. I loved the glasses that they used to serve the wine in. It is little attention to details like this which I love about Japan.
This place was absolutely incredible from the music and ambiance to the warm hospitality and exceptional wine. We only wish we had more time to visit again and again. Thank you!

My wife and I were in Kyoto for the beautiful cherry blossom season. We spent a stunning day touring the temples and then walking the philosophers path. By the end of the day we agreed that the only way to top it off would be a nice glass of wine, off the beaten track. Then we found Howene! It is a chill spot with cool interior design, nice vinyl tunes, lovely company and superior service!We had a great chat with Makoto (forgive me if I got your name wrong!). He was such a nice, laid back host and even gave us recommendations and booked us dinner at his favourite spot. We are still thinking about that beautiful day, the lovely wine and Howene after the holiday is done and dusted.We look forward to returning the hospitality in Dublin!!

This place is a bit distant from the central Kyoto but definitely worth a visit if you love record bar in quiet place. All the records are personal collection by the owner. The stereo is TANNOY and well fixed to let the space filled with excellent sound. The menu is natural wine selection and some bakery made by owner's wife. The owner can speak English fluently and feel free to chat with. A great place to escape from the crowded tourism spots in Kyoto.
