This is the best place we've stayed in anywhere in Japan, across the many times we've been here. Dani and Evan were fantastic hosts and you can see the love and attention that went into this place. There are knick knacks of the past everywhere. Not just from the Showa era, but of the family that lived here previously. It is spotlessly clean and full of amenities, with excellent WiFi. The hosts also went above and beyond, with excellent communication and arranging dinner reservations on our behalf. We would stay again in a heartbeat. If you're wondering where to stay while doing the Shimanami Kaido, this is the one a thousand times over.
We stayed overnight as a family of 6 (4 adults, 2 teens) as a halfway stop cycling from Onomichi to Imabari. It was the perfect spot and a great authentic house! The hosts were great and organised a reservation at a local seafood restaurant which was an experience in itself, the house was really cosy and plenty of space to leave bikes. And on departure, the nearby Family Mart has a picnic area with great views - excellent for breakfast and to stock up on snacks for the 2nd day of our bike ride.Highly recommend for a quirky and memorable stay!
We loved it!The personal attention was great. Detailed advice and the willingness to call to get us in a restaurant was just top! An amazing old house that has interesting things everywhere you look. Feel and experience the charm! I think it can sleep at least 6.All nice and good and clean!
Had the most amazing night here while cycling Shimanami Kaido. The owner was very kind, showed me around, and was happy to answer all my questions. The house is simply beautiful, with the most wonderful aesthetic, and the Western style bed is super comfy. The bath was lovely, and had just a wonderful night sitting on the tatami and realising a dream come true. Thanks so much for the stay!!
I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a more charming property than the Benton Guesthouse. It’s traditional styled rooms are well appointed and there’s plenty accommodate a long term stay. It’s also close to the Shimanami Kaido bicycling route, if that is in your plans. There are several restaurants within 15 minute walk. The one we went to was a lovely family run place with excellent homestyle cooking. I loved staying here and look forward to coming back.
Do you want to experience nostalgic retro vibes while also surrounded by serene beauty? If so, then this is the place for you! The home is perfectly adorable with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The space was well thought out down to every dish and towel. They even have honey from their nearby bee hives and miscellaneous vintage items for sale. The owners are super friendly andaccommodating with an interesting backstory on how they landed on Omishima. They will help you find amazing local gems to get food, etc. It's worth staying here if you are biking through or just visiting the island. Honestly, it's so cool l would recommend making a special trip if you are even close to the area. I can't say enough great things about how cute and functional this space was for us to stay in for a long weekend. We will be back to stay at the Benton Guesthouse again!
We absolutely loved this place. The aesthetics of the house were top notch, not to mention the options we had for rooms to sleep in.Dani was amazing to work with. She met us at the house and showed us around. She even helped us make reservations at a local restaurant and worked with our dietary restrictions.I loved the retro things scattered about the house. The area was super quiet, cozy, and beautiful.Dani was also super flexible with our check-in time, which was reassuring when we were biking through the rain.We would definitely stay here again if the opportunity comes up.

We stayed at Benton Guesthouse for two nights in January 2026. We were cycling the Shimanami and wanted to stay someplace about halfway through to rest for a couple days and explore a tiny bit. Couldn't have made a better decision!Dani and Evan are great hosts, very easy to see how they work together.I've lived in a traditional Japanese house for almost a year now, and we were pretty well-prepared for some of the eccentricities involved. But I'm happy to report that the Benton Guesthouse is well-equipped for any season, probably more so than my own house LOL.If you're considering a stay in the area, book early!Highlights:- Famicom in the tatami mat living room- Artifacts from all over the Shimanami/Shikoku, felt like a museum sometimes- Pre-lined futon made setting up beds a breeze
