We loved our stay at Vegan Minshuku Sanbiki Neko! Highly recommend it. Craig and Helen are lovely hosts who went above and beyond in their hospitality with helpful tips, delicious food, and ice/pharmacy recommendations when I twisted my ankle while out exploring. We thoroughly enjoyed the vegan breakfast each morning and Craig was kind enough to accommodate my partner's alcohol allergy - going so far as to purchase specific miso and non-alcoholic mirin so that he could enjoy the breakfasts. The room was clean and cozy, and the cats were adorable of course. We also enjoyed getting to meet the other guests!
We loved our 4 night stay at Vegan Minshuku Sanbiki Neko. Craig (and the cats!) were fabulous hosts - very welcoming, accommodating, and went beyond to help us out. The tatami rooms were comfortable, cozy and quiet, and the daily vegan breakfasts that Craig made us were the perfect start to every day! The location was great for us - we were able to walk to attractions (Sanjūsangendō Hall, Fushimi Inari Taisha) and nearby tasty vegan eats (silver backs cafe, MIMI)! This is THE accommodation to stay in if you're vegan in Kyoto. We would absolutely stay here again!
It's rare that the hotel itself is one of my trip highlights! Helen and Craig are as hospitable as can be and their breakfasts are absolutely delicious. The rooms are cozy with good light and comfortable futons. Most importantly, the cats are adorable! It's in a residential area so you'll have to be prepared to give the taxi driver directions, but the 5-10 minute walk to the nearest bus stop is pleasant and runs alongside a good view of the train line.
One of the highlights of our trip was a four night stay with Craig and Helen! The rooms cozy, comfortable, and well decorated. Every morning, Craig would cook an amazing Japanese-inspired breakfast and provide great conversation. He gave us tips about where to visit (and when), history of the area, and random stories from his life. It felt like I was staying with an old friend. Highly recommend and would love to return!
This was a highlight of our trip. Craig and Helen went above and beyond for us. The breakfast was incredible, the cats cute, and room very comfortable. Tons of extra amenities like laundry, coffee and tea and their invaluable knowledge - we went to Silver Backs Cafe on their recommendation and it was really good! The location is great, it feels like a quiet neighborhood but you are actually really close to some of the big temples and Kyoto station. Thank you for having us!
Recently had the pleasure of spending 7 nights at Vegan Minshuku, which was an incredible stay thanks to Craig and Helen (and the cats)! The daily vegan breakfasts prepared by Craig were such a great start to the day, along with him being a great conversationalist and the company from the cats were an added bonus. We found everything here very comfortable, including the location - just a short walk down to the bus stop or into town itself. Would definitely recommend vegans coming to Kyoto to stay, we cannot wait to return one day. Thanks so much Craig and Helen for such a beautiful week <3
Helen and Craig are the most delightful people I’ve ever met! I’d come back to Kyoto just to spend a few more days at their lovely stay. They’re warm, welcoming and go above & beyond to make you feel at home. They were not only kind enough to accommodate my luggage needs on a Sunday afternoon after check out, but Craig even drove me to the railway station & gave me a hand with the suitcases since it was raining, even though he didn’t have to. They really the kindest folks. Their breakfasts could honestly be classified as gourmet food. Cooked fresh and served hot - delicious and healthy. Even if you’re not vegan, you’ll absolutely adore their food! The place is beautiful with thoughtful feline art adorning it. The rooms are minimalistic in a Japanese style & have comfortable futon beds and are squeaky clean. A short 10 minute walk to the bus station. The cats are the cherry on top. Highly highly recommend them.
Vegan Minshuku Sanbiki Neko is a lovely place for vegans (and the vegan-curious) to stay in Kyoto. My wife and I stayed here for three nights in November and really enjoyed it. The accommodation is traditional but with all the mod-cons. We spent two nights in a larger room and one night in a smaller room. In both, the decor was very thoughtful and tasteful and everything was very clean throughout the guesthouse. The minshuku is conveniently located in a quiet area up a hill, within walking distance to all the main temples and shrines. The hosts, Helen and Craig, are very friendly and helpful. Craig's breakfasts were delicious and he prepared us a tasty wrap for our onward journey. Helen and Craig share their home with several cats so if you have allergies or are not a fan of our feline friends this might not be the place for you. We loved it though!
Don’t be swayed by the location, it’s just 20 minutes walking from one train line, 10 from another. The neighbourhood is cute and quaint and gave us a lovely other side to Kyoto and Japan versus the big city bustle. Craig and Helen were both lovely, particularly Craig’s helpful local tips about the attractions and food options in Kyoto were excellent. His lunch recommendation was my favourite meal of our 12 day trip! Craig’s breakfast was incredible - full of flavour and a great size. The coffee and tea options kept us buzzing and happy. The cats, when they visited made it feel so homey! Our room was spacious and the beds gave me a wonderful and comfortable sleep. Thank you Craig and Helen for providing such a wonderful place to call a home away from home!

This was our 2nd time with Helen & Craig - and the cats. After 2020 we finally visited Japan again and of course had to stay at the vegan minshuku. Not only was the vegan food outstanding again, the chats we had with Helen and Craig - and the cats - during breakfast were so wonderful, plus again they could give us great advice what to do and what to see at our 2nd time in Kyoto and also where to find vegan food. Thank you so much for everything!
