If you're looking for a unique and calm arts and craft experience in Japan that's fun for the whole family, I highly recommend making miniature food with Mayuka and Takanori at BONCHI Kyoto!Mayuka was sweet and incredibly patient with our group, especially with our young kids, as she explained and helped us create our unique miniature food souvenirs. The miniature food we made reminded us of the food replicas or shokuhin sampuru restaurants in Japan often have to help entice customers. Make sure you give this activity plenty of time in your itinerary since we ended up spending 3.5 hours on this activity. This experience was one of the top experiences the entire family enjoyed out of an entire two week trip in Japan and the kids are already asking when we can do it again!
I have been looking forward to the Bonchi workshop for the last few years after friends raved about the wonderful + enjoyable experience. My opportunity came and to my delight my daughter and granddaughters (8, 10) joined me. Mayuka's workshop was one of the major reasons we came to Kyoto from San Francisco.Any questions I sent were answered promptly & thoroughly. The four of us chose different projects and Mayuka and her husband explained each specific step carefully. Items had multiple steps, but we worked with ease and comfort. As you watch your mini develop, it was delightful. My granddaughters worked happily. Thank you Mayuki and her husband.
Mayuka & Takanori are very accomodating! I would recommend their workshop to anyone wanting a unique experience and a cute hand made souvenir to take home! I spent my 22nd birthday doing this workshop and it was the perfect way to celebrate. I myself am not artistic, but Mayuka is an amazing teacher and my final creation turned out amazing! Thank you for having us!
Mayuka-san and Taka-san gave my wife and I a most memorable experience making miniature food, in their beautiful studio. It is our second visit after 7 years. I highly recommend this activity for a unique Kyoto experience.
Such a wonderful experience making miniature food replicas with Mayuka. She was so kind, knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us through each process, making conversation along the way. Her small studio is just the perfect size for a small group (5 in our total group), and allows for adequate making space for everyone. I highly recommended this activity and Mayuka’s teaching!! Instructions are in English or Japanese, and everything was clearly explained. We will definitely be back in years to come!
One of my favourite things that I did in Japan - this workshop was an absolute delight! Mayuka was kind, attentive and encouraging throughout the whole workshop, not just teaching us the art of clay miniatures but also the history of food replicas in Japan. My partner and I both chose to make the full ramen bowl, which took ~3 hours. You are able to select the bowl that you will use, and Mayuka then guides you through the full process of making and assembling the individual components. This is beginner friendly and suitable for any skill level!Thank you Mayuka and Takanori for such a wonderful class! I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto and looking for a break from the crowds! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had the most amazing morning at Bonchi! Mayuka taught me all about the history of food displays in Japan and how she came to be a master of mini food creations! She talked me through every step of creating my lovely mini ramen bowl. She has put so much thought into this craft, down to replicating the texture of seaweed and pork with a toothbrush and tinfoil.Anyone looking for a bit of a break from walking around the crowded sights of Kyoto should 100% come here - I will treasure this experience forever!
This was one of our favorite experiences during our many trips to Japan. The couple who run the business are very lovely people to be around. The entire class felt warm and welcoming and we were properly informed about every step and every material used. We were also given snacks and tea and an opportunity to take photos of our creations. I would recommend anyone who is interested in crafting and making clay items. We cannot express enough how much fun we had and how enjoyable the entire process was. Please book a class and find out for yourself!
Amazing workshop and surprisingly beginner friendly or great for craft-loving pros— suitable for all skill levels :) after spending days on our feet while traveling , we were grateful to take a break from walking and work with our hands, chat with Mayuka and her husband Takanori, and create a lasting keepsake/memory!The space is very private and cozy. For a craft studio/workshop it was very clean! We were a small group of just two and spent a good amount of time following Mayuka’s instructions. She is a great teacher, a welcoming host, and very passionate about her work. Everything from our online booking, to the prep emails sharing info to find the shop and what to generally expect, to her kind follow up afterwards was perfect. We had such an amazing time, we would go back during our next trip :)

One of our favorite experiences on our trip!It was so hard to choose which miniature to make, they were all so cute! Learning the history and techniques were also so fun, Mayuka-san made it so easy to understand and do.We were in the class with another family with 2 kids. ALL of us became so absorbed in our little projects we didn't even realize how much time went by. The kids just as focused if not more than us adults. It was a very cool activity to do!Hoping we can visit again in the future! 10/10 would recommend this to family and friends.
