Aoki stone is a granite and it is justly famous throughout for Japan for its quality - particularly the colour and durability. It has been quarried for centuries and has been used in many famous buildings. Visiting the village of Aoki is a fascinating experience to see both the quarries and also a village that depicts the old way of life in the Seto Inland Sea. There are ferries that run directly to the village from Marugame so it is easy to get to and the village still has a local shop - which is an amazing place to visit in its own right. However, it is a good idea to bring your own food and drink. And if you like swimming, Aoki has a fabulous and unspoilt beach. The views over the Seto Inland Sea are also amazing, and if you are interested in maritime history there are the graves of two sailors from the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese ship to visit the US.
