Highly recommend for anyone looking to pick up a piece of authentic Japanese history!!A wonderful antiques shop in Kinosaki with exceptional service. The owner was incredibly helpful and friendly, taking the time to explain the history and craftsmanship behind various pieces. The experience was so enjoyable that I returned the next day to purchase an additional item. The shop has been in the same family for four generations and the owner’s expertise truly shows. A must-visit for anyone interested in authentic Japanese pieces.
One of my favorite shops in all of Japan. The store owner is incredibly knowledgeable and has hand picked each item himself. He will give you background and history of each item you are interested in. We left with many pieces well worth the prices! Probably my favorite purchases were made here. If you love antiques, this is an absolute must!
The owner is so nice here!! He taught me about the history and culture and I found some items I really liked and bought. He wrapped them very nice and gave me a very fair price! He is always getting new stuff and going to auction houses. I highly recommend checking this small shop out!!
If I could give 6/5 I would. Great customer service, hospitality and beautiful ceramics. Bought my favourite piece here, a nice matcha bowl. Don’t miss this place when in Kinosaki.
This charming shop is a great visit if you are in town. Sawada Kojiro-san is the 4th generation owner and very knowledgeable. He offers both antiques bought from old houses and second hand ceramic art, starting as low as 6 usd. We bought some 120 year old sets, which he very carefully wrapped for our flight.I encourage everyone to stop by between onsen baths and get a unique souvenir, a gift or a set for own enjoyment.
To see and touch actual pieces from the regions and in the styles I have only seen in text books, websites, magazines... both contemporary and antique... To talk with a gallery / dealer / owner who is holding multiple generations of knowledge and experience and generously shares his knowledge... and listens to you rave about the different clays, firings, glazes,priceless... living national treasures... etc.., it was an unforgettable experience. I am grateful to Kojiro-san for this experience and cannot thank you and your mother enough for your hospitality today. Arita ware. Bizen. Shigaraki. Iga. hagi. Shino. Red and black raku ware. Chawan heaven. Yunomi's... choko....plates... strongly recommend a visit... good luck not falling in love with a piece or more! Recommend to Japanese Pottery enthusiasts of various budgets.
We had a phenomenal experience today at Manpeidou gallery. The owner explained what period and age of each of the pieces we purchased. Additionally we were offered tea while we waited and sent off with an additional gift. I cannot recommend this store enough. A must visit spot while in town as we walked out with over 10 pieces as we build our ceramics collection and as gifts for family and friends.
What an amazing little store for ceramics - bought a really lovely tea bowl here at a great price, and also got served tea by the owner. The owner is highly knowledgeable and provided more information about each piece and the respective artist.Don't miss this store if you're in Kinosaki Onsen! 5/5
Had the BEST EXPERIENCE here at Manpeidou. The collection of ceramics, lacquerware, and porcelain is wonderful, made by local artists. The owner, Kojiro-san, was wonderful, explaining different pieces to us. I purchased a beautiful bowl and Kojiro-san took such great care in wrapping it up and while we were waiting, his mother came out and brought us all hot sencha tea for free as a surprise. Can’t recommend this place enough, definitely worth a visit!
