A truly unique store in Tokyo (and Japan in general) which feels like a museum. We were looking for a unique souvenir during our travel in Japan, and found it here! Many shops do sell Kokeshi Dolls, but the ones available here are unique pieces you will not see anywhere else and feel much more like art pieces compared to the ones on other shops. Although the shop is not cheap (we bought one for approx. 200 euros), it is worth checking out! More 'standard' items are available for lower budgets as well. Also when you do not buy anything, the owner is not pushy at all so you can take your time to discover the beautiful shop!
Nous avons passé un très bon moment dans cette boutique, venant initialement pour un cadeau, n’y connaissant rien nous-mêmes aux poupées Kokeshi. Michael a pris le temps de nous conseiller et répondre à toutes nos questions, y compris en nous expliquant l’histoire des Kokeshi. Plus que l’achat d’un cadeau, c’était une très belle expérience qui nous a permis d’en découvrir plus a ce sujet, un peu comme si on sortait d’un musée ! On a pas senti le temps passer et on en ressort avec un cadeau qui aura une vraie signification. Merci Michael et a la prochaine fois !
Expérience totalement inattendue, voire inespérée, cette boutique située à deux pas de la gare Harajuku regorge de trésors défiants l’imagination. On y trouve non seulement des modèles rares, voire uniques, mais aussi et surtout « Mike », le propriétaire des lieux qui n’hésitera pas à partager l’histoire de chaque Kokeshi disponible à la vente.Dear Mike, thank you so much for the long talks we had! We had a great visit here in November 2025, and this was a Tokyo highlight for us. This is as much a shop as it is a gallery, with lots of interesting, unique pieces on display.The place is a bit hidden from sight (but has good signage), and is located on the second floor of a residential building.The owner, Michael Fiorella, has been in the business since moving to Japan in the 1980s, and so is very knowledgeable about these dolls, the various artists and styles, as well as the general history of kokeshi art in Japan.We spent more than half an hour admiring the various dolls, and Mr. Fiorella gave us valuable info about kokeshi and patiently answered all our questions. He also struck us like someone who truly enjoys just talking about the kokeshi dolls.The collection includes beautiful pieces of all sizes, including some miniature dolls made out of single grains of rice. Many of the pieces are museum-grade. They are handmade by artists (and not mass-produced in factories).This is definitely worth your time if you are interested in authentic Japanese crafts.
Mike was great and the shop is very cool! Extremely knowledgeable and helpful and no pushiness at all. Lots of unique pieces to learn about and see. Helpful to have a chat in native English about something I didn't know much about. Worth it to stop in and chat even if you haven't even heard of kokeshi. I got a very cute 1970s doll as a gift for someone back home. Mike also gave some great recommendations for other places in Tokyo to check out, specific to my interests.
Visited the shop as my sister was looking for a particular doll, when I entered I was greeted with a kind smile, to my bad luck the one which I was looking for is not a handmade doll but rather a factory commercial made. The dolls at the store were all hand crafted and most of them were antiques. I wanted to buy most of them but not in my budget, maybe some day on another trip to Japan.
Visiting this shop was truly one of the highlights of my trip to Japan!I had read about this store online and was eager to stop by during my stay in Tokyo. Although the shop happened to be closed at the time, I reached out to the owner, and to my surprise, he kindly opened it just for my partner and me—on the very same day he had been released from the hospital!The moment we stepped inside, it was clear how much Mike loves and knows about kokeshi dolls. The shop holds the largest and most diverse collection I have ever seen, and listening to him share the history and stories behind the dolls made the visit unforgettable. We ended up choosing two unique and exquisite pieces that I have proudly displayed in our living room.Not only did we leave with beautiful art, but also with the memory of a truly special experience with someone who is deeply passionate about kokeshi. I cannot wait to return on my next trip to Tokyo!
