This is a 2nd C. Roman statue of 'Antinous as Vertumnus'. Antinuous was a favourite and lover of the emperor Hadrian, who tragically drowned while they were sailing on the Nile in 130CE.To immortalise him a cult was formed, and Hadrian ordered that statues be carved depicting Antinuous as gods - in the case of this statue as Vertumnus, or 'Spring' (seasonal change). He would have held a bouquet of flowers.This particular statue was salvaged in 1798 from the waters off Ostia, Rome, along with an identical statue that is on display at the Vatican Museums. The Vatican version is in much better condition, and gives a more complete impression of how this statue once looked.It once belonged to the privately-owned Matsuoka Museum of Art which was on the top floor from 1975 to 2000, but was left behind when the museum relocated to Shirokanedai.
