At the end of 1937, when the current 水天宮ピット Suiten-gu Pit site was being used as the former 旧東京市箱崎尋常小学 Tokyo City Hakozaki Elementary School,岩井光子 Mitsuko Iwai, who was a sixth-grade student at the time, passed away from illness.Mitsuko was an excellent student, and was particularly deeply impressed by the life of 吉田松陰 Yoshida Shoin. Before she died, she left a will to her parents requesting that they use her savings to erect a bronze statue of Yoshida Shoin on the school grounds.Despite their difficult circumstances, her parents fulfilled her wish, and a grand unveiling ceremony was held on March 22, 1938. At the time, this story was recognized as an inspiring educational tale by the 東京日日新聞 Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun, and many people, including the Minister of Education and officials from the city of Tokyo, attended the ceremony. The statue of Yoshida Shoin was created by 竹山蘭山 Takeyama Ranzan, and 海軍大将高橋三吉 Admiral Takahashi Sankichi, who was deeply moved by the story, inscribed the words "Mr. Shoin" on the pedestal.In April 1944, the elementary school was closed after all the students were evacuated to escape the ravages of war, but the statue of Yoshida Shoin has remained in the same spot, watching over the changes in 日本橋箱崎町 Nihonbashi Hakozaki-cho.In 2010, coinciding with the relocation of Tokyo Metropolitan Nihonbashi High School and the renovation of 箱崎公園 Hakozaki Park, the statue of Yoshida Shoin was moved to this location so that it could be more familiar to the local residents.
箱崎公園にある吉田松陰像です。---吉田松陰像の由来現在の水天宮ピットの場所が、旧東京市箱崎尋常小学校として使われていた昭和十二年の末、当時六年生の児童であった岩井光子さんが病気で亡くなった。光子さんは成績優秀なうえ、特に吉田松陰の生き方に深く感銘を受けており、亡くなる前に自分の貯金で、学校内に吉田松陰の銅像を建ててくれるよう、両親に遺言を残した。両親は生活が苦しい中でこの遺言を実現し、昭和十三年三月二十一日に除幕式が盛大に催された。当時この話は教育美談として東京日日新聞に表彰され、時の文部大臣や東京市の関係者など多数が参列した。吉田松陰像は竹鶴山が製作することになり、話に感銘を受けた当時の海軍大将高橋三吉が台座の松陰先生の文字を揮毫した。昭和十九年四月、小学校は全児童が戦火を逃れるため疎開したのち廃校となったが、吉田松陰像は同じ場所で日本橋箱崎町の変遷を見守り続けてきた。平成二十一年度に都立日本橋高等学校の移転と箱崎公園改修工事にあわせ、吉田松陰像をこれまで以上に町の方々に親しんでいただくため、この場所に移設することとなった。
