I enjoyed the south tamon-yagura at Matsue castle with my wife on a windy winter day. Even when the wind makes my wife feel a little chilly, the tamon-yagura is available to shelter from the wind, so even in modern times it continues its usefulness. As for the details of our visit, it was a Wednesday, 25 December, and the time was around 1 o’clock in the afternoon.After passing through the san-no-mon and ni-no-mon gate sites, turn right to see the steps leading up to the ichi-no-mon gate site. Because the san-no-mon and ni-no-mon gates are no longer present, it can be difficult to understand how difficult this entrance to the honmaru would be to assault. However, when I study historical maps of the castle, or look at the diorama in the Matsue History Museum, I can tell clearly that the three gates one after the other, with many turns in the path of the attacker, would have been very difficult to attack. Although most of the turrets are ruins now, I can see from the stone bases that they would have been able to attack the gate complex throughout the difficult path of the attacker.As I walk up the stone steps, see the impressive stonework of the Yumi-yagura on the left, with many huge mirror stones to demonstrate the power of the castle lord. To the right, see the base of the Bugu-yagura, which could fire at attackers at all three gates. When I try to imagine assaulting all three gates under the eyes of defenders in Bugu-yagura it feels a little . . . well, I can only imagine I would be cursing at the Bugu-yagura ! !Come to the top of the stairs. Ichi-no-mon is still hidden from view on the left, but pause and feel impressed by the 14 huge mirror stones in the stonework at the base of south tamon-yagura. I can sense the power of Horio Yoshiharu ! ! Please take it in slowly.Ichi-no-mon and the original south tamon-yagura were dismantled at the beginning of the Meiji era, so they are not originals. However, they were reconstructed in Showa 35, shortly after the restoring the Matsue Castle Tower. At that time, during the castle reconstruction boom of the 1960s, it was very common to build reconstructions from concrete, so a traditional wood reconstruction is a rarity ! ! I have a calm feeling in my heart when I think the reconstruction of south tamon-yagura is wood.However, when I compare the size of the reconstruction of south tamon-yagura to historical diagrams, it seems the width and the height of the building have been increased. Originally this tamon-yagura should have been a passageway for defenders to run between Bugu-yagura and Yumi-yagura, with many positions to fire on attackers; its size should be somewhat narrower. As it appears now, it seems like a complete single story turret. I wish the reconstruction was more accurate . . . When I see it from inside the honmaru, the reason becomes clear: doors open into an area with tables and benches, and signs inside invite me to eat a bento! In the winter this gave me and my wife and opportunity to get out of the wind, and I could think in summer it will give visitors some cooling shade . . . still, I would prefer the historical design, instead of building south tamon-yagura differently to make a more comfortable viewing experience.When I sit at the table with a bento, think of Horio Yoshiharu . . . I cannot believe his warriors would have needed this extra comfort. Please consider it slowly.Thank you for your consideration.

チケット売場がある一ノ門の隣にあります。細長い長屋造りの建物で外壁と倉庫を兼ねていたそうです。1960年に一ノ門と共に復元され、現在は休憩所になっています。
