This is a small monument marking the historical location of Kiyoto Road. It was placed by the Nerima Board of Education in March 2003. There is a sign and a small shrine with a statue. Nearby parking is limited. The translation of the sign is:Kiyoto RoadThe Kiyoto Road is a road approximately 15 kilometers long, stretching from the eastern to the western edge of Nerima Ward, traversing almost the center of the ward. Traveling east along this road leads to Edogawabashi via Mejiro Station, while traveling northwest leads to Kiyoto (Kiyose City) via Hoya and Kurume. This road was the shortest route from the villages of Nerima to Edo (present-day Tokyo). From the Edo period onward, farmers in Nerima would head to town early in the morning with vegetables, returning around noon with human waste. Farmers of medium or higher status carried the waste on horseback, while those of lower status carried it on a carrying pole.During the Meiji and Taisho periods, handcarts developed, and the sound of these wheeled carts vibrated the quiet pre-dawn air. It's a well-known story that there was a man named Tachibō who would push cars up Mejirozaka Hill for money. Thus, the Kiyoto Road was an important route for transporting agricultural products.March 2003Nerima Ward Board of Education
