Harusame-Bashi, literally “Spring Rain Bridge”, a beautifully named bridge placed over the Old Saka River on the Old Mito Highroad. There are quite a few spring rain related bridges or towns, the old Japanese seem to have appreciated rains in spring showering on waters like a town side pond or stream. The bridge itself and surrounding don’t have much to be told, before the present steel and concrete, it was a small wood and stone as I once heard. Apart from the new nice plaza park beside it, a couple of condominium buildings are dominating the view. However, as a former local, the Spring rain Bridge on the street on this point used to be emitting some almost aesthetic ambience. Over decades ago, this small area had a part of the town’s commercial and entertainment functions. There are now only two or three left such as Eisendo Okamatsu Japanese confectionery’s, kawai Meat Shop and Higurashi Liquor Shop, but until about 30 years ago, by the north side of the bridge, there had been a two-screened early-day cinema complex-like building, Kiryu-kan Hall and Bambi Theatre, which was one of the leading destinations for Matsudonians on the weekend. Opposite Kiryu-kan used to be Tohu-ya, selling children’s festive Japanese dolls, toys, sports BB guns and bow shop. A small but authentic cosmetic store, an old plant nursery, greengrocer’s, a local bank, a couple of clock shops, clothing stores... they had all gone, one by one.The bridge is also a direct passage to Matsudo Shrine. On matsuri festival days, there used to be festival crowds and festivity sounds along with food and souvenir stalls all began to be seen and heard as we about to pass the bridge towards the shrine… all nostalgic.Even today, people and kids enjoy walking and watching events in the park and the shrine, occasionally, and pass the bridge.Hope the feeling of good “spring rains” on this point never completely fades away for the next generations.
