I had a similar experience i Saga, an American who doesn't speak much Japanese, thsi time instead of buying the shinai I was buying. A beginners uniform for kendo. The two people working were very helpful and willing to engage with Google translate. They were able to find me my sizes, explain nuances and send me out the door with some gear I will be able to start training with soon! They sent me out the door with a small gift, appreciation for making the trip to Kumamoto from Sasebo.They seem to have a large selection of sizes as well!
