I’ve lived in New York, DC, Berlin, and more places. I came to Hakodate as a random trip and this was the gay bar that popped up when I plugged “gay” in to Google Maps.I walk in and it is an intimate and cozy place—Kojisan (Angela-Sama) has Isaac Hayes and old school r&b and disco playing.Everyone was welcoming to me as a foreigner. I felt like I was in his home and not a bar.I always felt out of place at gay bars back home. Here, I feel like I am regular, family. A cold beer and a gossipy auntie behind the bar.Sure, there were piles of magazines stacked on the booths but those mags are all pieces of gay history and I’m so glad he’s preserving them.There was a language barrier but it didn’t matter. I walked in as an awkward foreigner but I left like a regular—i only intended to stay for a quick round but I stayed for hours.I wish every gay bar I went to was like this, if I could give more stars I would! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
This is a fabulous small gay bar! We did not dine but the drinks service was efficient and friendly. This bar caters mainly for locals and so English is not spoken - but that made it fun and engaging! The host (or hostess, Mama-chan) is charming, friendly and interested in attempted discussion- Google Translate was very handy and everyone had a lot of fun. My partner and I will definitely visit again next time we are in Hakodate!!
A perfect, intimate little gay bar in downtown Hakodate. For newcomers, don't be nervous. This bar is open to all (locals and tourists alike), and is not members only. The owner is super sweet and friendly, and has a lot of great stories about his time working in Ni-Chome. The drinks are excellent and the atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming. If you're visiting from out of town, make sure to sign the guestbook!
The best experience I’ve had at a gay bar in Japan in my 3+ years here! If I lived in Hakodate, I’d be a regular.The owner (mama-chan) is kind, witty, funny, and very accepting (I mentioned I was transgender, and never did he or the other customers make me feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. Quite the opposite really).He’s been running shop for over 40 years, and literally is a master.It is a smaller place, but very cozy. It won’t be a bar or club like you may except in Tokyo or another metropolis, but if you are looking for a relaxed night out, I recommend.
