Legend has it that Musashi sat in zazen meditation on top of it.5) Indo-seki (4-9-25 Kurokami, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City) When Musashi died, his coffin was placed on this rock on the way to his burial site, and a priest recited sutras.6) Nishi no Musashi-zuka (7-7-12-5 Shimazaki, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City) This is the family grave of the Terao family, disciples of Musashi, and there is a theory that Musashi was buried here.7) Supposed Musashi’s Grave (4-610 Kurokami, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City) In the deepest recesses of Taisho-ji Temple stands a memorial stupa said to be Musashi’s grave. However, this may actually be a memorial stupa for the monk who performed the funeral rites for Musashi at the location mentioned in (4).8) Shinmen Musashi Tumulus (2340-2 Myoken-cho, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture)A memorial tower erected 152 years after Musashi’s death by the Murakami clan, descendants of Musashi’s school.9) Higaki Tower (2-10-1 Rendaiji, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture) In the southeast corner of Rendaiji Temple, there is a spot said to be where “Higaki”—famous as a character in the Noh play of the same name—actually lived, and the “Higaki Tower” stands there.
