This silk mill and the couple who run all aspects of it with amazing skill and care should be honored with awards for national cultural treasures.Their silk is used for priceless exhibition kimonos and obis. As silk is excellent for health support, I hope that in the future wearable products for everyday people like me can be made from the “silk cotton” that is produced from the second level silk.I visited during their off season because I have been involved with the preservation of sericulture farmhouses and kimono culture for 30 years and was so surprised to find out that this couple is doing what no one else is anymore, and more. Because the industry has dwindled down drastically, they do everything from farming the mulberries, raising the silkworms and hand spinning and making precious silk thread.If anyone is interested in experiencing their work, they offer day workshops at the nearby hataori silk weaving atelier “ton-cara”. I feel so fortunate to have met them and to learn about their work in great detail. They are so friendly and are not only experts in their craft, but excellent teachers as well. I look forward to experiencing their workshop.
