Awesome lodge in the heart of Hakuba. The location between Hakuba Train station and Happo Bus terminal is a perfect launchpad to experience all the local mountains, as well as being situated conveniently close to restaurants, onsens and public transport. The daily shuttles to the ski hills are super handy and made it easy for my wife and I to get to the mountain each morning. We usually took the local bus back to Happo bus terminal at the end of the day where we got picked up by the great staff in one of the cute vans. We also found the location within easy walking distance of many great restaurants in the Happo area and we really liked the onsen closest to the lodge called Mimizuku. As our first time in Japan Starfall Lodge was perfect as the shuttles and the location made everything smooth and easy. We also found the lodge to be warm, cosy and clean and we really liked our room.
Staying at Starfall for 4 nights, was an absolute pleasure. Jayden, Coen and their staff run a good ship here. From ever lasting advice and support, to ensuring the coffee is ground to perfection. The free breakfast is perfect before a day on the hill, and their facilities make staying there a breeze. The guys have free shuttles to run you around locally and also have us some splendid dinner recommendations within the town. Thanks for making our stay a delight! 🙌🏽
Detailed review- (Family of 4, 13yo girl and 9yo girl) We stayed 27Dec to 03Jan 2025.I would never give Coen, Jayden and the Starfall (SF) rotating staff anything less than 5 stars, but I’ll go into more detail below.Obviously we were skeptical of taking two young daughters to a “hostel,” but the facilities were awesome and the staff couldn’t have been better.Staff-Awesome!Very friendly and happy to go out of their way for special requests. Seem to be between 20-28 years old. Happy to play charades with our energetic child in the evening and pretty good Uno players.Room-awesome!We had a 6-sleeper: very comfortable queen/king size bed and two sets of bunk beds. Girls slept on top bunks most nights. We also had a spacious closet that allowed me to lay out a full size suitcase on the waist-high shelf with lots of room for hangers. Everyone slept great. Heater worked well and we used it to dry damp things on the small rack provided.Dry room-very helpful.Plenty of shelves and hangers for ski boots and outer layers. Hangers for gloves and helmets. Two sturdy stools for gearing up. Everything was dry and toasty when we wanted them in the AM! Almost too warm in the AM…haha!Bathrooms-great!There were 6 individually enclosed potties that gave plenty of privacy. Well designed for privacy, didn’t hear anyone else’s “business.” Didn’t have to wait for an open bathroom once and the hostel was fully booked.Showers-Nice private shower rooms!Outer room has a good lock for privacy and lots of space for dressing and undressing. Then the shower are big and have two shower heads, so the girls were able to share. Very hot water! Very clean!Laundry-didn’t need it or use it.There is one laundry machine with free soap. There is not a dryer, which seems common in Japan, but a small rack for drying in the room and plenty of wooden hangers.Shuttles-very helpful! The team seems to have worked out a great system. Sign up board for morning runs to the most epic resorts and then pick up in the PM is close to the main bus terminal. Getting a bus from the slopes was pretty easy.Let them know a head of time and they are happy to shuttle the party to dinner, then you walk or take a taxi back. We didn’t taxi, as the longest walk was about 25min, which wasn’t bad, even in a light snow.Location-4 out of 5.Not “close” to any single resort, but the shuttle and bus makes all of Hakuba valley accessible. The resorts are so different, you won’t want to stick to a single one anyway, so staying slope side seems unnecessary. We ended up having 2 favorites, and never had a problem getting on the shuttle sign up.Other than slopes, pretty central location. The bus was 10 minutes up the hill and the train station/associated shops was 10 minutes down the hill. Pretty good spot.Value-tough to say.We spent a little more than you would hope to in a hostel, but it was a major holiday in Japan. Overall, good value given the high demand and we were in a room for 6 with only 4.Breakfast/kitchen-excellent!6:30-9AM. Always a staff member on “Brecky” duty, happy to help out. Two kinds of cereal, toast, jelly, peanut butter, butter, bananas, oranges, hard-boiled eggs, and the staff will whip you up a coffee. Rena’s is the best. Sorry Tom. ;)Rental gear-didn’t use, but seems great.Agreement with local shop seemed to work well for my brother who was with us. SF shuttle drops you at rental and the shop brings you back. When you’re done, scan a QR and leave your gear; shop picks it up later. They had ski/snowboard stuff as well as winter layers for rent.Wi-Fi-excellent.Safety-excellent.There was a good mix of families and “other,” but everyone was very friendly. Lodge seems to be leaning toward more family and couples as they got rid of their “singles bunk room.” All the guests were from outside Japan and most spoke English very well.Overall-great holiday for our little family and can’t thank the SF team enough. Wouldn’t stay anywhere else when we come back! Thanks team!
Staying at Starfall Lodge made our overall stay in Hakuba exponentially better! It’s in a really nice location, close to bus stops and lots of nice food spots which came recommended by the staff, who even helped to make reservations on our behalf. Our equipment was delivered and collected without any problems too! Everyone who worked there - Coen, Lauren, Matt and Jen - were really amazing hosts and made the stay really engaging with plenty of common room games, breakfast served and, the highlight, a schedule for free shuttles to different mountains every morning! If I was to ever come back to Hakuba there’s no way I’m not staying at Starfall Lodge again! Thank you for making our visit that much better!

3ドアの安いボトルショップはとても便利だったので、次回は絶対に予約するでしょう!(原文)Great vibes throughout the whole lodge, the beds were so comfy with plenty of space in your room, new modern facilities throughout nice large kitchen to cook dinner when i didn't feel like going out, great location with restaurants located right across the road, it was only a short walk to the bus stop for riding and super close to all the bars! To be honest, I was skeptical when I saw so many glowing reviews before booking. I even wondered if they were paid advertisements. But now I know—the magic is real. This was my child's first stay in a lodge with shared bathrooms, and it wasn't inconvenient at all. With 6 staff members managing just over 10 rooms, the attention to detail is incredible. You can taste their dedication in the first cup of fragrant coffee every morning. They even offer a free shuttle to the main ski slopes for the first lift, which we truly appreciated. The highlight was the final moment when we all chilled out together in the yard—singing and dancing like old friends. The warmth and encouragement they gave us were unforgettable. We will definitely be back next time we are in Hakuba!
