Pastor Minami is a respected expert on local history relating to the Christians of Amakusa. The church was built here to honor the 3,333 Christian martyrs of the Shimabara Rebellion whose heads were sent to nearby Tomioka Castle as a warning against future rebellions. Rather than remember them tragically, we should honor them for giving up their lives because of their strong love for God and thank them for inspiring the generations of Christians who followed them to continue in their faith for centuries despite the heavy persecution of Christians in Japan during the Edo Period.If you want to know anything about Christian history in Amakusa and Nagasaki, Pastor Minami is a wonderful teacher who can explain things to you simply.
