Since then, many operators have emerged from unexpected places — general service businesses that are not naturally detective agencies, but which file paperwork with the authorities and quietly add surveillance, tailing and interviews to their services. After all, these are the profitable parts.This business thrives as society becomes more sensitive about personal data. As information becomes more difficult for ordinary people to access, its value increases. In that sense, detective work is a strange flower that blooms in the shadows of privacy protection.There is an uncomfortable paradox here. Without bending the rules, very few investigations would actually move forward. And yet, with the right registration, certain investigations can proceed openly, shielded by legal exceptions that remove the obligation to notify individuals of data usage. Infidelity checks, bullying investigations and runaway searches are all neatly categorised and stamped with official approval.So yes, everything is legal. But not entirely clean.
