Great pottery with fantastic designs.
For English speakers, this spot is called Yunoki Kiln Gallery Sugiura. The artist is Kenji Sugiura. His work is incredible. There’s so many techniques used. You can tell you’re looking at a lifetime of one person continuing to explore their art. Some of the pieces are just beautiful, and some have an incredible story. My husband chose a coffee mug that is made from mixing clay created from crumbling Heian ruins with ashes of burnt trees. He has literal thousand year old ruins in his mug! My mind was blown!It’s of course more expensive than stuff at tourist shops, but I thought it was still extremely well priced. The average piece we bought was $35. There’s a few much larger & more expensive pieces, but there’s also some smaller & less expensive pieces too. So there’s lots for any price point. For example, we got several sets of handmade chopstick holders in different shapes like fish, squids, veggies, etc. that are 2,000 yen (or about $14) for the set. They are perfect gifts.

素晴らしい作品が沢山あります。コレばかりは好きずきがあると思いますけど、ここで数点のコーヒーカップ、酒器、花器などを購入しています。とても杉浦健司さんの技法が 陶芸マニアの私にはズバリ とハマります。あまり民芸的な作品よりも少しモダンで可愛げのある作品が多いです。 氏は画家を志していた時期もあったようで絵皿に描かれる絵もとてもすきです。パンフレットには『使うたびに楽しくなり、身近にあるだけで心が安らぐ、そんな器をいつも新鮮な気持ちで楽しみながら作っていきたいと思っております。』 と書かれています。お人柄なんですかね。お店にいらっしゃる奥様の愛情たっぷりな作品の解説も楽しみです。 是非 人生を共にできる素敵な器との出会いがあると良いですね。
