Stumbled upon the 上田原合戦 案内板 (Uedahara Battle Information Board) and it's a really interesting spot for anyone keen on Japanese history, especially the Sengoku period. The sign itself (rating around 4.2 stars on its own) does a decent job of marking this historic ground. This board commemorates the Battle of Uedahara, which took place right here in February 1548. This was a really significant clash where the famed Takeda Shingen (then Harunobu), on his quest to conquer Shinano Province, faced off against the local warlord Murakami Yoshikiyo. What makes this battle particularly noteworthy is that it was Takeda Shingen's first major defeat! He lost several important generals, like Itagaki Nobukata and Amari Torayasu, and was even wounded himself. It's said to be one of the early Japanese battles where firearms saw some use, though their decisive role here isn't always emphasized.Visiting the site and reading the board really helps you imagine the fierce fighting that occurred. While Murakami Yoshikiyo won this battle, Shingen, being the formidable leader he was, eventually continued his campaigns, leading to further conflicts in the region, including the famous Kawanakajima battles. The information board provides a good starting point to reflect on this important, bloody event that shaped the control of Shinano. A worthwhile stop for history buffs to pause and consider the dramatic events that unfolded on this land.
