Can I buy your home, please? That was my first thought as soon as I stepped through the door of Onomichi Iori Fuu. In all seriousness, this was the most special place we stayed during our long journey across Japan. Everything about it feels deeply personal and cared for more like being welcomed into someone’s beloved home than checking into accommodation. The house perfectly balances traditional charm and modern comfort. Tatami rooms, warm wood textures, and soft light create a calm atmosphere that feels quintessentially Onomichi. Every detail, from the tea set waiting in the kitchen to the gentle scent of the cedar bath, reflects genuine thoughtfulness. You can tell the hosts take pride in sharing a piece of local life, not just offering a room.Location-wise, it’s ideal quiet and tucked away, yet just a short walk from the harbor and the narrow, winding streets that define this town’s soul. After weeks on the road, this was where we finally slowed down and felt at home. Iori Fuu isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a reminder of why hospitality matters. If I could have stayed indefinitely, I would have.
This traditional house and its panoramic view over the hillside town & water are truly stunning! As other reviewers have mentioned, check-in is a production — to first find the Thai restaurant (we followed Google maps to the wrong location — note that the proper spot is next to a pizza restaurant)… then to lug bags up 10 flights on a stair-street… but as soon as we arrived to see the sunset view, it was all worth it. It’s definitely best to arrive before dark — it helped us to stay at a business hotel near Onomichi station the night before, so we could store our luggage and arrive during daylight. There are three rooms: an entry tatami tea room (with no furnishings); a kitchenette (with 2 burners & fridge/microwave/sink and cookware); and a soaring bedroom with 2 comfy lounge chairs and panoramic views. The kitchenette, as well as the separate bath/shower & sink & toilet rooms are very convenient. One clarification: while the jacuzzi function is broken, the bathtub itself works perfectly fine. Also, heads up that there’s a second, portable heater in the bedroom — for our first night, even with all the blankets provided, and sleeping with hats, the air was quite cold in mid-December - felt like glamping… until we discovered the portable heater on our 2nd day ;)A few small updates to the space would make this a perfect 5 stars: using a lock box at the actual house, rather than having to walk all the way to the restaurant to pick up and drop off keys; cleaning the windows, to be able to fully appreciate the view without spots & blotches (we cleaned one ourselves and it was much nicer!); and adding a couple chairs to be able to sit and enjoy the lovely outdoor space & floor cushions in the empty tatami tea room.Overall, a magical stay in the charming hills of Onomichi, and we’d definitely stay again! Thank you so much for hosting us!
The view is great. Room is big.The stairs are a bit too much, especially when you want to go somewhere and come back quickly. Getting the room warm in winter takes all the equipment in there around 20 minutes as the insulation is thin.
Lovely cottage on the hill overlooking Onomichi - traditional Japanese house renovated into a guesthouse - front entrance room as tatami room and main room has 2 single beds. Small kitchen and bathroom in middle and toilet next to tatami room. Wonderful sunrise views, beds are a bit soft, steep stair climb to get there, lovely garden next to house. All very comfortable. Gorgeous big house beams above & stylish lamps. The bath is broken, so only a shower is possible, a simple tub would be better & view from bath window is nice. The water is fine to drink, so they shouldn't have plastic water bottles - a water filter would be better. They also shouldn't give single use plastic toothbrushes - wooden ones or expect guests to bring their own better. A container of coffee, instead of individual sachets, or even better, ground coffee and a french-press would be best-high-quality & less waste. Leaf tea from local tea factory Gen would also be nicer than plastic tea sachets.Overall a very nice, comfortable place to stay!
