What an amazing day at this traditional family business doing indigo dyeing and weaving. We made our own special Tenugui cloth, had tea and toured the weaving area too. Perfect from start to finish
We came to Amanokouya to do tie-dye t-shirts using indigo. It was a fun event to do with our children. The dye master was very good at teaching how to do the patterns we wanted. His explanation was very easy to follow. We also got to have a tour of the factory. It was great to see one hundred year old machinery still being used and working perfectly. I recommend the experience if you like history and if enjoy doing a bit of craft during your holiday.
A friendly guy who speaks a little English and will show you the indigo vats and maybe 100yo weaving machines. If you email in advance you might get a hands-on dyeing experience. A fun winding drive to a super quiet town - we enjoyed it.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, hands-on experience that connects you to the heart of Japanese craftsmanship, I highly recommend visiting Amano Koya.I had the chance to try indigo dyeing under the kind and patient guidance of Amano-san, a true artisan who brings warmth and wisdom to every step of the process. From learning about the natural indigo fermentation to folding and dipping the fabric, you get to immerse yourself in a tradition that has been passed down for generations.Watching your creation slowly turn deep blue as it meets the air is almost meditative—it’s like seeing time and nature work together. I walked away not only with a beautiful hand-dyed piece, but also with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of simple, honest craft. If you’re traveling through the area and want to try something real, personal, and unforgettable—this is it.
