Some information for foreigners who want to go surfing:We asked for/reserved a surf lesson a few days before arriving in Nachikatsuura, since we (lower intermediate level) felt like some guidance might be helpful for a totally unknown surf spot with little information to be found online. What we found out on site:When we were there (end of May), there were no waves at the beach of Nachikatsuura. As we learned, by that time of the year the swell comes from the south and you need to drive about 20 min south to a beach where you have quite good (and long) left waves for intermediate level. It's a bit dangerous though, since it is a reef break with some stones only about 2 feet below the surface.Starting from July/August (and best in September/October), you should also have decent waves in Nachikatsuura, which is a beach break.The owner, Shinichi, does not speak much English, but you will get along with Google translator or similar. When we arrived at the shop, he told us where we could go surfing and he could bring us there by car. He was quite honest about the conditions, he didn't promise better waves than there actually were (for our level, they were actually pretty adequate). Overall, he would be rather a guide than a coach. He got with us into the water and showed us where to catch the waves, but didn't give feedback - due to the language barrier, this would have been tricky anyways. Overall, we were a bit more than 1 h in the water (driving and changing was another hour). That was fine for us - if you want more time, maybe ask in advance to make sure he can accommodate. We got soft-tops (not sure whether he didn't want to give us hard-tops without really knowing our level) and wetsuits, which were in good condition. We paid a rental fee for those and in addition for the guided surfing session.
Good Communication, super nice, great value and easy going. Everything you want in a surf shop.Thanks for the surf rental today! I was very happy to surf the bay nearby. And the local surfers were great to chat with. The waves were short but fun!
