Such a nice experience we had, lovely staff, super discreet, lovely area, calm, top cleanliness and of course amazing private onsen experience !

Admittedly, this place is in the middle of nowhere, and I got lost and had to reverse down a narrow, single lane mountain road for about 200-300m. Not to mention it was getting dark, and there was a drain at the side of that road…Eventually I reached the start and saw a small wooden sign and a little light. This is the fork in the road that leads to resort Oguni. This place consists of a long cabin separated into two guest rooms. The owner’s house faces the guest cabins, it would be nice if his house faced away/was a little further away to give the guests a bit more privacy. There is some construction going on at the side and a rectangular swimming pool that looks like it is filled for summertime. The room: it has pretty much everything you need. It smells and looks clean, and there’s even a piano which I enjoyed playing badly in the evenings. The little kitchen is stocked with oil, salt and pepper, tea and coffee. It has a portable stove, a comprehensive Japanese stove with a grill, fridge, cupboard with a large variety of bowls/cups/shot glasses etc. The only thing I couldn’t find was a kitchen knife (only scissors) but I brought my own so it wasn’t a problem. The owner had thoughtfully put a little vase of fresh flowers on the kitchen windowsill. The water from the taps tasted really clean fresh and good.Beds: we spread the futons out in the living room as the bedroom had a single bed frame with a mattress on it that took up a bit of space. We put our luggage there instead. Only one bed sheet is provided and the blankets are very basic. Not the most comfortable I’ve had, but still acceptable.A small path leads past the public sitting area where you can bbq, and to the bathhouse. Each guest room has its own private bathroom. The bath is indoor and outdoor, and the water is a little milky blue in color, with a slight sulphur smell. The outdoor bath is cooler than the indoor bath so you can sit in it longer. I really enjoyed it! Though, if another couple were staying at the same time it wouldn’t have been quite as enjoyable. At night, we grilled quality beef slices from the supermarket and went out to look at the stars and smell the fresh air. This was very important to me as someone who comes from a big, crowded city.I enjoyed this stay very much and would love to come back again. It’s not for the first time tourist looking to stay in a traditional ryokan with kaiseki meals, but for those looking for a relaxed, self catering holiday in nature in the middle of nowhere :)
