Giacomo Manzù was born in 1908 in Bergamo, Italy. His real name is Giacomo Manzoni and is one of the leading exponents of sacred sculptural art. In 1929 the artist moved to Paris, then to Milan where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.From 1954 to 1966 Manzù was a professor of sculpture at the Salzburg International Summer Academy where he was commissioned the main door of the Salzburg Cathedral and then commissioned by Pope John XXIII to build the "Gate of Death" for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.He died on May 17, 1991.
