Our little adventure to this shrine was our first experience of the Land of the Rising Sun. My husband and I were stuck in Narita for one night because our flight from Boston was delayed and we missed our connecting flight. The airline put us up in a room at Hotel Nikko Narita. We went to bed immediately after checking in, but, at 2:00 am, our jet-lagged bodies woke us up, and we couldn't get back to sleep. Fiddling around on Google Maps, we saw the shrine just down the street from the hotel and decided to go on an adventure. We crept through the dark, poorly-lit streets, searching, smelling the tang of the ocean on the still night air. Braving narrow highway shoulders with no sidewalks, we made our way past a brightly-lit but seemingly abandoned car rental service. We saw that the road crossed a narrow bridge at that point, and it was unclear what lay on the other side. The shrine was nowhere to be seen. Feeling defeated, we decided to turn back. But, at the last moment, we glimpsed the old concrete stairs and recognized them from the Google street view photo. Our goal had been reached! A sense of adrenaline-filled fear swept over me as we mounted the stairs, but my husband's bravery urged me on, despite the appearance that a zombie might leap out at any moment from behind the unkempt trees. We reached the top of the stairs. In the pre-dawn blackness, we could barely make out the silhouette of the shrine. A modest relic of grander times. To commemorate our success, we took a few photos, but the darkness forced us to use flash, and our pictures turned out looking like something out of a bad horror movie. As we picked our way along the roadside back to the hotel, we saw the first pink smudges of sunrise lightening the horizon.
