Wow. The staff here is absolutely splendid, both the Yuucho bank side and the postal service side. It's a bit small but what can you say, as a foreign student in Japan you have to appreciate these people's super fuzzy attitude. For a Yuucho bank and a post office, definitely five stars but I'll briefly complain about the Yuucho bank system of Japan. There are a few caveats to using the Yuucho in Japan; they are-1) This used to be true in 2015 when I first made my Yuucho account in Tokyo, but it may have disappeared; Yuucho banks did not allow you to transfer any money to and from your bank account for 6 months. In other words, they gave you a paper bank book that you could deposit and withdraw money from but that was about it. For 6 months at least. I talked with the staff in the Kyoto Central Post Office and they told me that it's gone now. If it indeed is, good riddance.2) You can only make bank accounts from a Yuucho that is CLOSEST to your place of residence. In other words, you cannot make an account here if you live in another Ku(Or there is the possibility that the banker who helped me back in Tokyo was trying to get me out of her afternoon, but she seemed sincere enough and consulted someone by phone before giving me that answer, if I remember correctly). Makes sense, but some private banks allow this so it's not the most convenient, I would say.3) To get internet banking, you need something called a 綜合口座。
The Sogou means it's a complex account, but unfortunately, that is not what most bankers make for you when you ask for an account, not even in other banks. They will get you something called a 普通預金口座, or a 'regular' bank account. The difference is, with other private banks you CAN use internet banking with that regular bank account. Which really makes sense wherever you are from... I've never heard of requiring a special kind of account for internet banking in some of the other countries that I've lived in. So anyway, if you want internet banking badly... and forgot to ask for a Sogou Kouza... you go to the Yuucho again for the procedures.... well, you get the picture.TL;DR: This place is as good as a post office in Japan gets. But if you are here for banking(as opposed to mail service) and are going to study in Kyoto University for over a year, I would probably make an account in one of the other private banks in the neighborhood like Shogoin, Higashiyama or Jinguu-marutamachi areas.PS: After several visits to other post offices in the neighborhood, I think the offices at the Yoshida area and the Takano Tokai area are as good as this place, for sending international parcels. If you are a Kyodai-main campus student, you may well use those; if you are a medical student or a Graduate Student of Medicine, go here. The people here, especially the elderly ladies, are really, really helpful.
