Before being designated as a cultural property of the prefecture, it was a cultural property of the city. Before that, I remember it was commemorated by the Ichinoseki Medical Association. The contents of the current commentary board and my English translation are posted below.

Prefecturally designated tangible cultural property "Toyokichi no Haka"On November 13, Tenmei 5 (1785), 16 doctors around Ichinoseki clan received the corpse of Toyokichi, who had been executed for criminal activity, from the clan and dissected it. The doctors were able to clarify the doubts concerning internal organs that they had for many years, so they respectfully buried Toyokichi and built this tomb. Originally, it was located in the former Hashidahara execution ground of Ichinoseki clan.Since ancient times, dissecting the dead was considered a blasphemy, an unforgivable act. However, in the middle of the Edo period, in Houreki 4 (1754), the first officially licensed dissection of a human body in Japan was carried out in Kyoto, and in An-ei 3 (1774), Genpaku Sugita and his group translated a Dutch medical book and published it as "Kaitai Shinsho", and so on. These caused a spirit of emphasis on empirical evidence emerged from both Kampo medicine and Dutch medicine sides, and dissections began to be carried out in various places around Japan. In this background, dissecting Toyokichi was carried out at an early stage in the Tohoku region. Around this time, in Ichinoseki, people such as Seian Takebe II and Gentaku Otsuki began to study Dutch medicine. Their influence is believed to have been enormous.Matters related to this are introduced at the Ichinoseki Museum.March, Heisei 25 (2013), Ichinoseki City Board of Education
