We had the best afternoon with Taro and his family. We cooked yummy things and had an amazing exchange. It’s so nice to talk about Japan with real Japanese people. Thank you so much 😊
The highlight of our trip in Kyoto. Taro and his family are wonderful people and this was a perfect way to spend the afternoon. It was as much of an insight into Japanese culture and customs as it was about the food. We had so much fun talking about life in Japan and Kyoto. Don’t miss a cooking class with Taro!
(原文)Great experience - not just a normal cooking class where you learn how to prepare Japanese food but also why things are done in a specific way. You can ask all kinds of questions (not just about food) and you will experience a super friendly real Japanese home.
(原文)This was one of the highlights of my and my family's stay in Kyoto. Taro led us in detail through an appreciation of the fundamentals of Japanese cooking (and eating), including much that I wish I had known a long time ago. He was extremely patient with all of our questions. We felt very welcomed into his home and also encouraged in trying out new things. Most importantly, Taro makes a point of kindly and skillfully expressing his opinions, which meant that we had a real meeting of cultures and exchange of points of view rather than simply social pleasantries. I highly recommend this to anyone who is curious to learn more about Japanese food and culture.
(原文)Fantastic experience! Taro and his family are very welcoming and hospitable. They taught me not only about the basics of Japanese home-style cooking, but also about aspects of Japanese culture that are easy to miss as a tourist. Taro is very passionate about sharing his culture and was willing to answer all our questions - be it about the best way to store soy sauce or about the nuances of gossip and peer pressure in Japanese and Western communities.
そこに行きます!(原文)It was great ! I mean learning the tips and tricks of bashi was great, but i specially enjoyed the passion and heart that habits taro while he speaks about his culture, cities, and so forth. You really feel welcomed and nearly at home. Go there !
We learned so much about Japanese food, and culture. Everything we made was SO GOOD! We had a wonderful time and highly recommend Haru cooking class! Such a unique and fun experience!
(原文)Had a great time learning some of the basics of Japanese home cooking. Taro is a great teacher who took the time to explain the various dishes as well as answer our questions about food, Japanese culture and much more. I would happily recommend if you have time in Kyoto.
(原文)An excellent experience and one of the highlights of mine and my husband's trip to Japan. Taro and his family are so warm and welcoming and learning in the environment of a Japanese home was a unique experience. The class was so insightful and unlike other cooking classes where you are just taught how to cook, you get to learn all about the cooking equipment, ingredients and the culture of eating. As the class was relaxed we were also able to talk to Taro about Japan and the culture in general which was so informative. The food was simple enough to cook at home yet delicious and a true reflection of Japanese home cooking and we feel very inspired and confident to cook Japanese food at home. If you also want to try Kobe beef this is a great way to experience it and know that you are cooking and eating true authentic Kobe beef.Afterwards Taro was kind enough to email us more information about the cooking class and the food we cooked which was greatly appreciated. Highly, highly recommended if you are in Kyoto it is one of the best and unique experiences we had in Japan.
Absolutely fantastic experience with delicious food. Taro gave a very thorough overview of the basis behind japanese cooking. Highly recommend.
In our journey to search for great food around the world, we very often found great people. Taro and his family hosted one of the best cooking class we have experienced (parallel to Mimo in San Sebastian and Catacurian in Barcelona), not just because we were spoiled by delicious Kobe beef, well organized teaching, great ambient and hospitality, but more because of Taros personal charm to explain the context of Japan ingredients Japanese culture, perspective behind the philosophy of cooking which you rarely learn from cook book. The opportunity to get closer to a Japan family and satisfaction of curiosity of Japanese view was priceless. We spend most time enjoying the conversation than chopping, despite all enthusiastic students asking all sort of questions and completely spoiled the class time, Taro was very engaged from start to end and in the end kept apologizing for prolonged class - another Japanese culture lesson for us. Good job and when you have 3 day cooking workshop I would be the first to come.
Taro was very welcoming and amazing, giving me insight of food in his own home in Kyoto and the culture in Japan. He is so nice and open to any questions. Thank you so much Taro! ^_^
We signed up for Haru Cooking Class expecting to learn to cook some Japanese food and learn a little about the ingredients, which of course we did. What we didnt expect however was to gain a deep insight into Japanese culture, the way they think and are brought up to think. We left with a much greater understanding of how Japanese society functions and why things in Japan are the way they are. Taro very openly shares his honest thoughts and opinions on Japanese culture and contrasting it with what he'd personally experienced living in America for many years. The fact I've made it this far into the review without saying anything about the Kobe beef probably says it all to those who know me. Taro and Yoshiko, teach very simply how to cook core Japanese dishes that are delicious and easy to make. The centre piece genuine Kobe beef steak was the most delicious thing I've tasted. The class should really be named Haru Japanese Culture Masterclass. If this isn't already on your itinerary then pick anything and replace it with this, I guarantee it will be better than what you originally planned anyway.
Had a wonderful experience at Haru Cooking Class. Taro and his wife are incredibly welcoming, friendly and put together an informative and fun insight into Japanese cuisine that is the perfect compliment to any traveller's adventure to Japan. Highly recommend!
Great experience, Taro & his wife are exquisite hosts! Highly recommended
We had a great time at the cooking class. Taro was very informative, he explained to us the difference between Kobe beef and wagu beef, different types of miso, dashi as the base of Japanese cooking. We learned a lot. My younger daughter aged 11 enjoyed the most, she was able to cut using a knife, made tamago. If we visit Kyoto again, we would take the class again, hopefully Taro will teach us something new. Taro's family was also very nice and kind, we had a wonderful afternoon.
Taro, our host, cook and teacher was incredibly knowledgeable and skilled in what he does. The whole experience revolves around the role dashi plays in Japanese home cooking, and what counts as top quality Kobe beef. As to not give away the details of what the class entails, I will say no more other than that you will leave with a newfound appreciation of Japanese cuisine and culture in general.Taro's command of English is outstanding and will answer all and every question you may have about life and food in Japan!
Wow! Just finished my class with Taro and I was immensely impressed. The class is all about the base ingredient (Dashi) and how it is used as a building block of many different recipies.Taro is a great instructor putting his class at ease with his teaching style and immersing each group with one another. He was willing to answer questions and teach us.
Taro was a lovely host and imparted a ton of knowledge about Japanese cooking and culture. We learned how to make miso soup, 3 side dishes, and Kobe beef. Definitely worth the trek

Taro was such a knowledgeable and passionate teacher of not only Japanese cuisine but their history and culture as well. The class felt intimate— It felt like you were cooking with a friend. We learned so much about the ingredients (particularly the importance of dashi!) and it all came together into a beautiful meal. I would highly recommend going with Haru Cooking Class and adding this to your itinerary.
