国学者の上田秋成(1734~1809)は,大坂の養家嶋屋上田家の家業紙油商を継ぐ傍ら,『雨月物語』などを執筆した。
60歳を過ぎて京都に移住し,知恩院門前袋町や南禅寺山内など居を転々としたが,友人の歌人羽倉信美(1750~1827)邸で没した。
この石標はこの地よりやや南東にあったと思われる秋成終焉の地を示すものである。
