This school, KIST, is one of the top IB school in the world. From my research and as a student in this school, I have found out that the school is in the top 10 percent of all IB schools. There is quality education and service provided, so I believe it is a great school to attend.
don't even think about coming here, you're just wasting your money. there are way better international schools in Tokyo
I hope this review reaches anyone who's visiting here for a tour or something (it's the reason why this review is on Google Maps). I used to be a secondary student here, and I’ll tell you everything this school doesn’t.Where do I start?First off, all they care about are the grades that the students receive in the IB curriculum. The first thing that comes up in the school's website is that they have a DP average score of 37 or whatever. As a Diploma student, I have seen how this profit-hungry organization manages to receive a high score. Exceptionally talented students? No. Great teachers? HELL NO. They do this by teaching exactly what is required by the IB, and only that. In the span of grade 6-10, this means forcing the students work on a single, specific topic or project for months. In grade 10, I have had a 3 month "unit" on the French Revolution, where I had to write multiple, detailed essays on that single topic. The problem is even worse for grade 11 and 12 students. All they do is make the students repeat the IB theory-based textbooks and IB past exams like robots in excruciating detail. I almost laughed off when one of our teachers took a whole serious lesson to teach us the specific terminologies and phrasing techniques that we must use to boost our IB score by 1%. Anyone can receive a high IB score in that kind of a school. More importantly, the emphasis on grades poses a serious fault in the breadth of knowledge that the students gain. Sure they can ace the exams and IB projects, but they become ignorant when taken out of that limited context. How narrow-minded are the students? Well the library is never used for students to borrow books. If that’s any indication.Second, there is no school life. In any school, you would expect to get yourself into a club that interests you. Don't expect any of that here. The only sport that they are decent at is basketball, and other sports clubs are either only carried out on a weekly basis or non-existent. Save the MUN and a couple of charity groups, there aren't any significant extracurricular clubs here for students to explore their curiosity. No music clubs, no robotics, no math competition, no debate, no photography etc. Again, all they care about is grades, and that's it. People graduate here without the slightest idea of what they actually want to do in life. If you decide to enrol here, you shouldn't expect anything from the school outside of class other than a few lame clubs or school events. The school advertises its mission to encourage personal growth, but that is an utter lie.Thirdly, the school is incredibly profit-minded. I understand, they are private, but this is extreme. I believe that the large portion of the expensive ¥1.5 million+ tuitions that the students must pay, are being taken away as profits for the founders. There are no other explanations for the following: -the main secondary campus, which is basically a refurbished primary school from 50 years ago-a small gym from 50 years ago-a small field of 20x25m, that is supposed to satisfy 600+ students-overpriced school uniform, school lunch, and other services that the school provides-requiring parents to pay ¥10k+ for not doing their volunteer requirements of 4 times a year-lack of investment for extracurricular activities-“KISTival” – a sponsored school festival that generates ¥1million+ of profit, none of which have been used for the studentsAs a side note, the school advertises itself to be international, but it really is not. Most of the students are Japanese, half-Japanese, Korean, or Indian, and students only stay in their small social group of the same ethnicity. So what is K. International School? An environment that focuses too much on a limited range of educational topics, which doesn't have anything outside of class for students to attend, and wastes most of the money you pay. Please take my advice and don't attend this place. There are significantly better established international schools in Tokyo: St. Mary’s, SEISEN, ASIJ, etc. But this is not the place.
For any of those curious or interested in the school environment of K International School, please allow me to tell you what it is really like being a student here. First, the school is unbelievably and extensively focused on academics; and by that, I mean TOO academic. It is one way to praise the average GPA or whatever it may evidently show a school's academic level, but there have been professionals from universities that have evaluated this school and even say it was too much for students. Is it normal for 11 year olds to stay up till 4am trying to finish a great workload of assignments? All the school cares about is the grades you get, and in fact, it is the only thing this school cherishes. Just have a look for yourself when visiting the website. There are no photos of students having fun or engaging in sports, music, and other extracurriculars. Instead, it is just digital photos of the IB program and what it is, and the so called "Learning for Life" motto. More like it drains the life out of you.. Teachers teach in the only way that is required by the IB and nothing else. It causes students to think in such a naive concept, and it isn't even about learning anymore; it's purely about getting a 7 or an 8 (which is an A or A+).Second, despite the school saying they care for the academic progress of students, the only thing I hear coming out of the founders of the school and teachers are the fact that girls aren't tying their hair, or the color of their hair ties are not black, and other irrelevant things that couldn't possibly involve one's intelligence, etc. What does the color of a student's socks, shoes, whatever you name it, have to do with their grades or how well they are doing at school? Moreover, the faculty of the school pressurizes students to think of college from grade 5. That's right, grade 5. The fact that they discuss and hold assemblies to talk about college for hours straight and say that extracurriculars are one of the best ways to present yourself in college, there are NONE in this school that allow students to explore and see what best interests them. In fact, they do not invest money into any clubs, nor the property, which has been a reused building over 50 years ago and is practically dirty and nasty. They require students to pay for a carnival that they hold and raise over a million yen, yet still refuse to use it for the needs of students. Can I also say that they refuse to purchase tissues for the students? Because apparently, it is too expensive for them to invest in (A staff of the school had told me this). If that doesn't explain what I am trying to say, I don't know what will. Lastly, the founders of this school does nothing but keep the money raised and 'donated' by students (despite of our tuition fees, we still are required to pay for held events). They do nothing to ensure the safety and happiness of the students, but rather scream at girls for having their hairs not tied up or the AMOUNT of hair that is being tied. I noticed how people are surprisingly naive and narrow minded in this school. Again with how college is deeply introduced from grade 5, these people grow up to think that college is EVERYTHING; and that without deciding from an early age, a future is non existent. Sure, college can be a great way to prove yourself in this society, but it is just one of the many ways to be successful. College isn't everything, but I find it saddening and depressing to see these brain-washed people who purely focus on what university they are going to. K International School restricts students from expressing what they want best for not only themselves, but what the school needs to become better. There is no form of expression in the things students do. It is just students who repeatedly stay up till morning trying to finish all of their assignments. I could go on more on how this school just isn't suitable for anyone, but all I am trying to imply is that..if you are greatly interested about enrolling here as a student, or just in a school with the IB program, this is not the one.
IB school in Tokyo with friendly students and staff. Sometimes holds professional learning events.
