This was only budget option for Oshima during spring equinox long weekend. ¥5400 seemed overpriced for a one person capsule, but owner was kind to inform us of a ¥3000/night discount coupon from tourist office which made it much more affordable (nice stick the metropolitan government with half our bill, hehe)! You're getting this same discount automatically off the ferry to oshima too whether you realize it or not. Oshima is trying hard to promote more tourism. Not sure why they keep a two day bus pass so highly priced (for 3,000/pp you might as well rent a car if you are two people or more). Also a bit annoying that visitor center and map failed to point out Furasato experience hall only has expensive classes (¥2000+pp which start early in morning). The Camelia museum at the zoo is also not on map and has no sign. We sat in front of it eating lunch thinking it was an office. So we missed it and had to make a special trip the next morning which was further frustrating because we got off at the Camelia tunnel (which had no flowers anyway and turns out you actually drive through the "tunnel" on the road while still on bus) then bluff trail (bayside walking trail) to Camelia park is permanently washed out and we had to walk along the road so might as well stayed on bus lol. We'd have made it to the Furasato experience earlier and paid the ¥2000pp to press Camelia oil. We showed up a few minutes past 10am and were told it was too late to join the class that just started and it was our last day. Seems if oshima really wants tourist dollars they'd try a little harder to explain this on map or at visitor center where we spent a half hour upon arrival bc the lonely planet guidebook has zero info and even trip advisor has very little English. The closures and museum info is the kind of thing visitor centers usually take a pen and write for you on the tourist map but even traveling with a native Japanese we were told nothing there, gee thanks...Capsule was a great place to stay. My only complaint was no hot water for morning shower in men's room. Also the refrigerator in men's dorm was unplugged so my groceries spoiled overnight. The vegetables we put in the women's fridge got ruined bc they were frozen solid, omg. I was disappointed that camellias bloomed early in February this year. There were hardly any around the island by March 19-21 the holiday weekend we visited at end of festival. The festival performance was 7:30-9 at motomachi pier but was just some modern dancing by kids and senior citizen women (so tired from overnight ferry could barely keep my eyes open at that point). If coming as a couple you might want to book far in advance and pay the ridiculous price for non-segregated accommodations. Was a bit weird to say goodnight and sleep in completely separate dorm areas. This is still supposed to be Tokyo after all, lol. Young couples wanting an affordable romantic getaway consider Hakone which we did last year! These islands seem geared towards retirees with oodles of cash to blow on a few days or families coming to camp and fish with a lot of outdoor gear. Also it did rain a lot during our visit so think twice about camping unless you rent a car and have good gear. The two campgrounds are a bit isolated and apparently require applying way in advance through town hall. By contrast our March 3day vacation last year to Hakone was much easier and affordable (minus the cheesy tourist traps like little prince museum and other bs "museums" Hakone is famous for gouging tourists with). One really great thing about oshima is the locals are super nice and will give you rides to places. We were given a ride up the mountain and another coming back to Haba from fudeshima which was really helpful.
