Santa Monica Internationa...
Fantastic school. I am very happy with the teachers and the education my daughter is getting. She is really blossoming ever since attending. They addressed a small problem we had immediately and in a caring fashion. As soon as our budget allows I will be sending her little brother as well.
Our son started at Santa Monica International School (SMIS) when he was four-years-old. He started in pre-school, and we enjoyed our experience so much we decided to keep him there for his elementary school years as well. We are a military family, live on base, and live within walking distance to the base elementary school in which our son would have been enrolled had we decided to transition to a DoD school. While it certainly would have been more convenient to have our son go to school so close to our house, we could not in good conscience remove him from the learning environment in which he was thriving in at SMIS.When we moved to Okinawa, I was working on my degree in Early Childhood Education, and was extremely discerning in choosing where we were going to place our son for preschool. After researching and visiting several schools in the area, SMIS won us over hands down. While our son was in preschool, I enjoyed the school’s open door policy and the opportunity to sit in the office and view the live feed video camera of my son’s classroom at anytime without notice. There were a few times when I would drop in to check in on my son unannounced; each time he was safe, happy, and enjoying his classroom experience. If I ever had questions, his teachers always made me feel welcome, and were open and honest in speaking with me. We loved having the parent-teacher conferences once a semester. This allowed the opportunity to “check in” with our son’s progress. This one-on-one time with his teacher also gave my husband and I the opportunity to review areas that we assist with while at home. His teachers worked with us like a wonderful team; everyone focused on the same goal: success, happiness, academic achievement, and the well being of our son in the classroom. Our son has been enrolled in the elementary school side of SMIS for nearly two years, and continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Throughout his time at SMIS, his teachers continue to be wonderful, and I love the fact that throughout the time my son has been enrolled at SMIS, we see familiar faces around the school. Staff turnover rate appears to be extremely low, and that means a lot to me. I feel that focus has been placed not only on student and parent well being, but emphasis has been placed upon the internal customer as well, the academic and administrative staff of SMIS. Communication from our son’s teachers has been clear, concise, and ample. Our son loves his scheduled field trips organized by the school. Overall, I always feel that our son is safe and is prospering in his learning environment. Unequivocally, I would recommend SMIS to anyone. Administrative and academic staffs are committed to quality care and education.
Santa Monica International School is the best school for my family when we were in Okinawa. My husband works for the Military and we move a lot. We tried international schools in Kuwait and Dubai, but by far SMIS meets and even exceeds our expectations both academic and other extra-curricular activities. They are very family-oriented environment, their staffs are really hands-on with their students. Even now that we are back in the US, my kids still remember and how much they misses their old school. Definitely, if given a chance to comeback to Okinawa, Santa Monica will be our choice.
WARNING!!! Military Families. This school is overrated. Americans like me assumes International School means top notch education. This could not be further from the truth when it comes to Santa Monica. My daughter began there at a very early age for the first year and a half of her life I was in the states (Active Duty) while she was here with her mother. And during that time she attended Santa Monica. So After I moved to Okinawa to be with my family I became more involved in my daughters life. Being the proud father that I am loved to pick her up at school. I would wait outside the classroom and watch her for a little while before letting her know that I had arrived. I noticed that there was little to no structure. And insufficient supervision of the children even with two teachers in the classroom. I watched my daughter and a few other children go to the restroom as instructed by the teacher and then left there unsupervised for them to pee on their hands, put their hands in the toilet and put it in their mouth. After they were done running around unsupervised in the restroom the teachers didn't even take them to wash their hands. I should have pulled her out of that school right then. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt and told myself maybe it was a lapse in judgement. I'm sure they don't usually let the kids run around in the restroom and not wash their hands. The next major problem I had with this sad excuse for a school; which is really a glorified expensive daycare, is that my daughter had an accident and wet herself. The school has the parents send cloths to the school for instances such as this. Well they teachers ran out of cloths and instead of calling us and letting us know to bring cloths or finding a spare pair of pants they let her go the day in her underwear in winter. Now Okinawa doesn't get cold really but a 2 year old in 50 something degree weather raining with no pants is unacceptable. Now this pissed me off extremely. I was furious and long behold my daughter got sick and had to miss school. The third strike was when My daughter had another accident the dreaded number 2. This was at the early stages of her potty training. the teacher didn't tell us that she had an accident when we went to pick her up instead we found out when we got home and emptied her backpack. they didn't put the dirty underwear in a plastic bag they just threw it in her backpack as a nice surprise for us. That was the last straw we went in and took her out. They insisted on a meeting and not only did they try to talk us into keeping her there they charged us a fee for disenrolling her early. The only thing my daughter learned at that expensive daycare was how to sing and dance to adult songs sung by kids. The classes are disorganized and the lower ages spend most of there time singing songs and watching t.v . I have another daughter who just turned two and she will never step foot in that school her older sister who had the misfortune of attending that horror show now attends the Christian Education Center which is miles ahead of that disgrace (Santa Monica) the classes are beautifully structured and she is learning a lot she just turned 4 and I couldn't be happier with her progress considering the horrible beginnings she had at Santa Monica. They let the children run wild. It has been an uphill battle for us, her parents and the new teachers to correct their (santa monica) mistakes. So if you are looking for an actual school and not a daycare who will just put your kid in front of the t.v. to keep them quiet, then the Christian Education Center is really good and I am also looking at the Montessori Schools for my younger daughter I really like the learning environment and curriculum. If you have your child in Santa Monica do what I did watch them from outside the classroom and I am sure it wont be long before you notice subpar unacceptable behavior from the staff. But if you are looking do yourself and your child a favor and look elsewhere.
